About

Komala Party of Kurdistan (Kurdish: کۆمەڵەی زەحمەتکێشانی کوردستان) is a political party in East of Kurdistan (Kurdish: ڕۆژھەڵاتی کوردستان, romanized: Rojhilatê Kurdistanê). Komala works for a free Kurdistan based on democracy, socio-economic justice, and gender equality.

Founded in 1969 by university students and political/social activists, Komala began as a leftist political organisation. Due to political repression and dictatorship at the time, open political activity was impossible, so Komala, like many others, started as an underground movement. Despite imprisonment and torture of its founders, the party endured and maintained its structure. After nearly a decade of secret activity, it publicly announced its existence in 1979 following the martyrdom of Kak Hama Husein Karimi.
