Brussels – “Constructing a Democratic Iran” Conference

During the “Constructing a Democratic Iran” conference held at the European Parliament, Fariba Mohamadi, Deputy Secretary of the Komala Party of Kurdistan, delivered a speech representing the “Alliance of Iranian Kurdistan Political Parties” This presence and articulation of positions take place at a time when the “Komala Party of Kurdistan” holds the rotating leadership of the coalition, advancing its strategic agenda.

In her address, Mohamadi challenged the traditional power structures and official interpretations of the nation-state concept in Iran, while criticizing the securitization of national identities. She noted that the demand for the legitimate rights of these nations and the emphasis on the “right to self-determination” have systematically been met with allegations of separatism, criminalization, and violent state
suppression over the past century.

Furthermore, she stated that reducing these national resolves to restrictive terms such as “tribes” or “ethnicities” constitutes a disregard for historical realities and the authenticity of these struggles.

Continuing her analysis with reference to regional geopolitical precedents and the perspectives of political commentators, she emphasized that the current borders of the Middle East were not the product of the absolute will of the nations themselves, but rather the result of historical international agreements and power consolidation. As a prominent example, the Kurdish nation was divided among four countries due to these imposed borders.

The Alliance’s representative, reminding the audience that political borders have historically been fluid and should not be viewed through dogmatic prejudices, underscored the necessity of transitioning away from the century-old official narratives. She characterized the reproduction of unitary democratic thought among certain factions of the Iranian opposition as a political taboo that must be dismantled.

In the concluding section of these stated positions, it was explicitly asserted that for the era following the collapse of tyranny, society cannot be left with overarching yet ambiguous slogans. Any sustained and cooperative coexistence within the geographical framework of Iran is strictly contingent upon guaranteeing structural equality across three key domains: national rights, linguistic-cultural plurality and gender equality.
